Foreigners Everywhere - Matrimonial visit

In India, not all adults of marriageable age find a partner on their own. Sometimes it’s the privilege of the family and friends to find a suitable alliance. So there would be matrimonial visits paid by the groom and his family.

With all the cultural, linguistic and regional differences, all Indians believe marriage is not only a relationship between two people but also a union of two families, which means everything matters related to the whole family, how many are married or earning or studying, what is the family status and rank in the community, how they talk, behave, or their values. Most of the time they would have done the required background check already. So whether it's a love marriage or an arranged one, there would be a premarital get-together of families. During this phase, it's an amazing sense of foreigners everywhere.

Generations of people come together to visit the bride's place. The girl's side would be ready, looking their best, with a full table of snacks laid out for the visitors.

Girls from adolescence and up in the bride's family will be out of sight. This is because the visitors may not get the idea that they have options to choose from. So all the other adolescent girls in the family will try to have a glance at the groom through some corner. Because they have to give their opinion and approvals to the bride about the groom, they believe honestly that their opinion matters!

Once all are settled, the grand entry of the bride-to-be happens, sometimes the alliance works and sometimes it won't. Generally, the event leaves both sides with mixed feelings. It's a phase to reckon with. Every Indian is familiar with this event, either as the protagonist or as a witness.

Its an Indian middle class setting and so I have picked the colors accordingly. I have not seen plates as decorative elements on the wall but looks like its a very popular thing and so just thought of using them here. I have tried to give it an Indian middleclass living room look. I enjoyed doing all types of skin tones within the family because that is the truth of skin color here. Even siblings are born with different skin tones!

Layers of paint are applied with the glazing technique to get the desired effect. You will receive it unframed and need to re-stretch it on wooden bars to make it ready to hang. The edges are painted, and it comes with a signed Certificate of Authenticity. The signature is at the front left bottom.
