Foreigners Everywhere 1 - A Kiss is about to happen

The 60th International Art Exhibition, titled Stranieri Ovunque – Foreigners Everywhere, will be curated by Adriano Pedrosa and organised by La Biennale di Venezia.

The expression Stranieri Ovunque - explains Adriano Pedrosa - has several meanings. First of all, that wherever you go and wherever you are you will always encounter foreigners— they/we are everywhere. Secondly, that no matter where you find yourself, you are always truly, and deep down inside, a foreigner.

I am doing a series of paintings based on this thought.

A little bit about myself: Growing up, I attended six different schools, and in all places, I have felt mostly like an outsider. The transition period was difficult and demanding. The challenge was further increased by the fact that we were raised in a different state and speak a different mother tongue. 

Having said that, I felt that this was a series I had to do because of my personal experiences traveling abroad and my strong ties to the Indian diaspora. I will be portraying events from the perspective of an outsider in this series, as this is a sentiment that I will always hold dear. I have always felt like an outsider, but these days I accept it because nobody feels unfamiliar to me!

This is the first painting in this series I would like to call it 'A Kiss is about to happen'

This is a reminiscence from the 1990s, from someplace in the Himalayan foothills. "There's going to be a kiss," someone exclaimed as we were seated in the bus! After that, we turned to see a white couple having a conversation. The air was charged with the expectation that something spectacular would occur at this very moment.

Indian conservative society is quite private when it comes to publicly showing love to a spouse or partner. For those who aren't impacted by TV or the internet at all in those days, this is a scenario not to be missed!

The woman had come to see the man, who was possibly an engineer assigned to a dam project. So she was leaving returning to her country. Their attention is focused on each other, and the rest of us all eyes gazing at them. Himalayas is a place always thronged by traveling foreigners, so the locals knew what was about to happen before they both part!

Growing up, we used to travel a lot. So this was a trip with my parents. I wanted to call out to my mom and say, ‘Hey Mom, look'! but the next moment I kept quiet because she would have asked me to turn my face. So me and my sister decided to let my parents stay busy talking to each other.

I have started this series from my own land - India. I hope to share in this series my experiences from around the world.

The visual quality of this painting is stunning in both indoor and natural light. I apply gesso to the surface with 3 coats for a smooth finish to start the painting. Then with a coat of sienna for underpainting I finalize the painting theme. Finally layers of paint is applied with brush by glazing technique to get the desired texture.

I give a retouching varnish after 6 - 8 weeks for longevity and protection from dust. A permanent varnish is applied to every painting when the painting is fully dry (within 1 - 2 years).

You will receive it unframed. Signed on the front left bottom, both edges painted, comes with a signed certificate of authenticity.

This artwork will be shipped rolled into a tube, carefully wrapped in bubble foil.
